ABOUT
“HAKU“ is one of the readings of the character “百” which means “hundred”. Medieval Haiku poet, Basho Matsuo likened eternal passage of time to ”百代の過客(haku-tai no ka-kaku)”, a permanent traveller. In his time, a hundred years was expressed as eternal. HAKU was originally built as a farmer’s shed about a hundred years ago. It was recently relocated and renovated into a Japanese style villa for another hundred years. HAKU will welcome you as traveling companions.
Before industrialisation, lumber was recycled over and over again. The structure of HAKU was seemingly relocated once before this time. Ancient woodworkers chose mortise-tenon joints without a single iron nail, and they numbered each lumber so that all lumbers can be assembled back again. You can find those unique techniques since HAKU was preserved and designed to demonstrate those interesting backgrounds. Renovation of HAKU was partially funded by Takayama City Council, which intends to pass the traditional techniques on to the following generations.
